The sisters at the Carmelite Monastery of Roxbury entrusted us to renovate their stunning home, in a way that was in parts modernization, reconfiguration, and restoration. Despite altering some program areas drastically, we sought to embrace and enhance the original architecture. Our design included the creation of a new primary prayer space in a formerly unfinished storage attic; a complete renovation of the Preparatory and Choir where public and private musical performances take place; new Work Rooms for the sisters; renovations to the third floor work spaces and corridors; HVAC and lighting updates; and a new interior entrance to the adjacent chapel.
We paid special attention to the details of the new spaces, to further the contemplative atmosphere sought by the community. We developed custom stone floor patterns, custom-built light fixtures, and abundant built-in millwork to harmonize with the existing architecture, and to serve many future generations at the monastery.
